Pas de gorge blanche, ce qui exclus la plupart des espèces connues du Niger. Les remiges noirs et la manque de taches crèmes sur les épaules excluent l'Engoulevent à balanciers. Alors un Engoulevent terne. Les taches blanches sur la queue indiquent qu'il s'agit d'un mâle. Notez sur les photos dans le NiBDaB le couleurs de base variable de cette espèce, liés au couleurs de la terre et des roches locales.
No white on throat ruled out most of the nightjars. Black flight feathers and lack of cream spots on the shoulders exclude Standard-winged Nightjar. It must therefore be a Plain Nightjar. White on tail identifies it as a male. Note in the photos in the NiBDaB the variable basic colouring in this species, related to variation in the colour of local soils and rocks.
