Thanks to Stephen Walters for helping identify these two youngsters. Stephen wrote:

"From what I can tell they are two juvenile Shikras. I have found that the two outer tail feathers are very clearly bared from the underside on Gabar Goshawks, where as on Shikras they are a grayish white, and the barring barely shows (if at all) through (viewed from the underside) like the lower one in the picture. Gabar Goshawks also have very obvious barring on their lower breast, flanks, belly and thighs, but those in the photo have tear-drops not barring. In my experience all juvenile Gabar Goshawks have tear-drop streaks on the side of the neck, throat, for-neck and upper breast, at about the middle of their breast there is a very vivid change from streaks to clear barring.

In my personnel experience ... I have found that most Shikras do have have dark tipped primaries to some extent. I have found that they don't, however, normally have tips as dark as that of the Levant Sparrowhawk. Gabar goshawks also tend to have, to some extent, darkly tipped primaries, but it is not near as noticeable as those on the Shikra.

... I have also found that Shikras (like the two in the photo) have large barring on there upper flanks only visible when the wings are out spread. This barring is quite visible in the Shikra in the upper corner."

Equipment: Canon 30D, EF 100-400 IS @ 400mm
